Welcome to the UT Tyler Chemistry Department!
As Chair of the Department of Chemistry at The University of Texas at Tyler (UT Tyler), I WELCOME you to our web site and THANK YOU for your interest in our chemistry program.
The Department of Chemistry offers the Bachelor of Science in chemistry, the Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, courses in geology and physics, and secondary teacher certification in chemistry and physical science. The chemistry program offers the student an opportunity to gain an appreciation of the chemical world, to develop an inquisitive nature, to train in the use of the scientific method, to prepare for entry into industry, government, or one of the medical professions, to train as a prospective teacher, and to prepare for advanced study.
If you are excited by recent advances in the sciences and have achieved success in high school or junior college science and mathematics, then the chemistry program at UT Tyler may be for you. We are seeking talented, energetic, and creative students who would benefit from a high-quality experience in science at UT Tyler.
Students may enter the chemistry program at UT Tyler in two ways:
- by entering UT Tyler at the beginning of the freshman year
OR
- by transferring to UT Tyler from another institution of higher education at the beginning of the sophomore year after completing at least eight semester hours of general chemistry, six semester hours of differential and integral calculus, and eight semester hours of university physics (calculus based)
Advantages of studying chemistry at UT Tyler include:
-
UT Tyler offers a challenging chemistry program preparing students for their chosen careers, small class sizes, classes and laboratories taught by professors committed to excellence in teaching, modern laboratories equipped with the latest instrumentation and computers, personal attention given to students by faculty outside of classes, active student science organizations, and a beautiful campus setting. UT Tyler chemistry alumni have achieved success in their chosen fields. A large percentage of the alumni have earned graduate or professional degrees.
- The requirements for the Bachelor of Science in chemistry are among the highest in Texas. A total of 49 semester hours in chemistry is required. Of the 49 semester hours, 41 are upper level hours. Undergraduate students have opportunities for personal interaction with faculty and hands-on experience with a wide array of scientific equipment.
- The faculty are actively involved in undergraduate research funded by a $90,000 departmental grant from the Welch Foundation and by grants from other sources. Many of our students serve as Welch Scholars, carrying out undergraduate research projects at UT Tyler under the supervision of the chemistry faculty. Results of the research are presented at scientific meetings and are published in peer-reviewed, scientific journals.
- Of the more than 65 UT Tyler chemistry alumni, one is a medical doctor (M.D./Ph.D.), six are medical doctors (M.D.), two are dentists (D.D.S.), one is a lawyer (J.D.), four have earned M.S./M.S.I.S. degrees, and ten have earned Ph.D. degrees. Four chemistry alumni are currently enrolled in Ph.D. science programs as teaching and/or research assistants, and one alumnus is enrolled in a M.D./Ph.D. program (with a full scholarship).
- The department is very proud of the very high acceptance rate of medical and dental school applicants who have graduate with the Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry at UT Tyler. Several chemistry alumni are secondary chemistry teachers. No student who has completed a major in chemistry at UT Tyler has failed the ExCET in chemistry or physical science for secondary teacher certification on the first attempt. Very complimentary comments regarding the quality of the UT Tyler chemistry program have been given by alumni.
- The department has a very active Student Affiliate Chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS). The chapter has been nationally recognized by the ACS as a Commendable Chapter in 1995 and 1999 and as an Honorable-Mention Chapter in 1998. Since 2000, the the chapter has been annually reconized by the ACS as an Outstanding, Commendable or Honorable-Mention Chapter. Based on annual reports of activities, the recognition places the chapter in the top 5% of approximately 950 chapters.
- In the past years a number of UT Tyler chemistry majors have participated in summer undergraduate research programs at leading universities, outstanding medical schools, and a national laboratory in the United States. The department has received reports from their supervisors of their outstanding performances.
- Members of the chemistry faculty are active in professional societies, such as the American Chemical Society, Sigma Xi, and Texas Association of Advisors for the Health Professions. They regularly attend professional meetings with students. The faculty is active in the community by serving as civic leaders, by judging local and regional science fairs, by providing chemical demonstrations with students at area schools, by presenting talks to schools and local organizations, and by presenting interviews and information on science issues to radio and television reporters. The chemistry faculty serve on numerous university and school committees. Feel free to contact individual faculty members directly through their e-mail address on our web site.
If you would like further information on our chemistry program after previewing our WWW site or would like to visit UT Tyler and our department, do not hesitate to contact me by e-mail at dmcclaug@uttyler.edu or by phoning our departmental secretary at (903) 566-7262.
