  • Congratulations to Dr Gray on being named a 2007 Minnie Stevens Piper Foundation Professor! The award recognizes outstanding teaching at the college level in the state of Texas. For more information read the press release.
  • Mr Sam Weaver has retired as a Senior Lecturer in Physics. Mr Weaver was instrumental in the revival of the physics program here at UT Tyler and taught several semesters. We wish him the best in his "retirement".
  • The search for two assistant professors of physics was successful. Dr Randy Back and Dr Jennifer Kreft were hired and should be great assets to the Department and the University.
  • The following students attended the 233rd National ACS meeting in Chicago in March: Abigail Green, Scott Moss, LaTerrica Williams, Heather McBride, Maureen Davis, Christine Renson, Blake Fowler and Arika Pravitasari. They were accompanied by Drs Taylor and Gray.
  • Brannon Gary ('06) received an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship at the University of Michigan. He was only 1 out of 7 inorganic students nationally to receive the award which pays $30,000. Way to go Brannon!
  • We have added new equipment: a Cary Eclipse Fluorescence spectrophotometer and

    Cary 300 UV-Vis spectrophotometer equipped with a Peltier 1 x 1 cell holder.

(Fall 2006)

  • The UT Tyler ACS student chapter won the prize for best student group booth at the Patriot Preview Days on November 4. Let's give a big hand to Christine Renson, Abigail Green, Heather McBride, and Darvy Mann for putting together the winning display! Great job!
  • CHEMISTRY PROGRAM APPROVED BY THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY!

The chemistry program has received the American Chemical Society's approval for it's program. Now all chemistry graduates meeting the ACS requirements will be certified as chemists by the American Chemical Society. This is something that the entire UT Tyler family can be proud of and is a sign of the great things happening here at UT Tyler. It also validates our conviction that we have a top-notch chemistry program with outstanding students, faculty and support staff as well as the support of the administration. It was a team effort all the way! Read the news release.

  • The UT Tyler ACS student chapter was named a commendable chapter by the American Chemical Society. This marks the 9th consecutive year that the chapter has been recognized on a national level. Way to go!
  • Dr Smee and Ms Ragain attended the 232nd ACS National Meeting in San Francisco in September. Both gave seminars over their research. Dr Smee was nominated for an outstanding young investigator award in the Inorganic Division.

(Spring/Summer 2006)

  • Israel Ortiz, junior chemistry major, won third place for his poster presentation at the University of Texas System Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation Undergraduate Student Research conference in El Paso on September 22, 2006.

Israel Ortiz presented his research on “Analysis of the African Malaria Mosquito Anapheles gambiae Cuticular Hydrocarbon Profiles by GC-MS and MALDI-MS”.  Dr. Kevin A. Schug, assistant professor of analytical chemistry at UT-Arlington supervised Israel’s work.

  • Dr. Randy Back has joined the faculty as a visiting assistant professor of physics and comes to us from The Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts at Northwestern State University, Natchitoches, Louisianna.

  • We have moved! Check back later for links to pictures of our new home in the new Ratliff Engineering, Science and Technology Building.

  • We recently acquired two major instrumentation upgrades. Our Varian 400 MHz Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectrometer with variable temperature and multinuclear capabilities will provide an extremely valuable tool not only in research, but also in giving our students hands-on experience with state-of-the-art instrumentation. The Agilent 6890N Gas Chromatograph/5975B Mass Spectrometer with a 7683 Auto Sampler enables us to have the latest in ion chromatographic capabilities. Pictures of our two new "babies" are forthcoming.

  • Speaking of babies, Dr. Taylor and his wife, Mary, welcomed the second addition to their family, Aaron, in July. Mom, dad, Aaron and big brother, Nathan, are all doing well.

  • Dr. Tanya Shtoyko spent this summer working at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in the lab of Drs. Karol and Ignacy Gryczynski.  Her studies of surface enhanced fluorescence focused primarily on examining different silver deposition approaches to improve the detection limits of biomarkers.  Dr. Shtoyko is now preparing three papers for publication as a result of this collaboration.

  • Dr. David O'Keeffe, professor of chemistry, and his wife, Barbara, chief safety officer, retired this past June and are currently touring the country in their RV.

  • Ms. Christina Ragain joined the faculty as a lecturer in chemistry. She received her MS degree in chemistry from Yale University this past May.

  • Congratulations to our three newest alumni who graduated in May. Brannon Gary is currently pursuing a PhD in (inorganic) chemistry at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Luke Potts is currently enrolled in the MD/PhD program at Texas A&M University in College Station. Dean Stuart is following in Dr. Shtoyko's footsteps by pursuing a PhD in (analytical) chemistry at the University of Cincinnati. We're confident that they will represent UT Tyler well.

  • Congratulations to Jason DiStefano and his wife Robyn who were married in April.

  • Dr. Jason Smee was awarded one of four 2006 (UT Tyler) President’s Faculty-Student Summer Research Grants to study the redox properties of vanadium-sulfur compounds and worked with senior-to-be Arika Pravitasari during the summer.

  • Drs. Tanya Shtoyko and Jason Smee served as judges at the ACS Meeting-in-Miniature held at Texas Women's University on April 29.

  • Dean Stuart, Brannon Gary, and Luke Potts each presented posters at the 231st National American Chemical Society Meeting in Atlanta in March and were accompanied by their faculty sponsors, Drs. Shtoyko and Smee.

  • Congratulations to undergraduates Brannon Gary, Darvy Mann, Luke Potts, Dean Stuart and Skylar Stagner who were included in Who's Who Among Students in American Unversities and Colleges.
